about us
Welcome to the website of the West Mainland Darts Association. The WMDA is the organisation responsible for running the darts leagues and cups in the West Mainland of Orkney. Orkney is a small group of islands off the north coast of Scotland with a populaion of around 20,000.
Our darts season commences in September and finishes in April.
The Men's League has 8 teams for the 2009/10 season, the Legion, Royal and Golf Club from Stromness, Noust 1 and Noust 2 from Orphir, the Smithfield from Dounby, the Merkister from Harray and the Pomona from Finstown. Each team plays each other twice, home and away. Each league team comprises 6 players. The format for the league matches is as follows: Each team captain writes their team selection on the score sheet in order from 1 to 6 without knowing the order of their opponents. 3 doubles games are then played, players 1 & 2, 3 & 4 and 5 & 6 forming doubles partnerships against their opposite numbers. Then 6 singles games are played, each player playing against their opposite number. After that, 6 more singles games are played, but this time the names are drawn out of a hat. Each game is 501 played over the best of 5 legs. This means that each match is over 15 games, meaning that draws are impossible.
There are also several cups played for throughout the year. The format for these varies, but most of them are for 4 man teams, playing 501 best of 3.
The Ladies' League has 8 teams this season: the Legion, Golf Club, Noust, two teams from the Smithfield, Merkister, Pomona and Evie. The ladies have 6 per side, but the format is slightly different. There are 3 doubles and 6 singles of 501 double start, best of 3 legs. The ladies' cups have a similar format, but with a straight start.
As well as the leagues and cups, there are singles, doubles and mixed doubles championships and matches between the WMDA and the association from the East Mainland, the Kirkwall & District Darts League.
